Moving to Windows 8? Test your applications first with Citrix AppDNA!

The first time I encountered App-DNA was when I was still with Microsoft helping out with Windows Vista deployment. Back then a lot of applications working on Windows XP simply refused to work on Windows Vista. Microsoft placed a lot of security features in Windows Vista to deal with vulnerabilities in Windows XP. If for any reason the application relies on these Windows XP features that were removed or behaved differently in Windows Vista, then those applications would not work or misbehaved on the new OS.

There were tools to test for application compatibility on these newer (back then) operating systems. Microsoft has its own technology called the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT). I also keep hearing about a product called App-DNA. Then a short time back, Citrix acquired App-DNA and rebranded this technology as Citrix AppDNA (without the hyphen).

Some of the cool features and capabilities of this product are as follows:

  • The usual tests for Windows Vista/Windows 7, 64-bit, Windows Server 2008 R2 compatibility
  • Test webapps for IE or Firefox compatibility
  • Test apps for App-V or XenApp Streaming – and generate the App-V Sequence / XenApp Streaming Profile!
  • Compatibility tests for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012
  • Support for Citrix XenServer. This product is the hypervisor of Citrix, and has a 30-day evaluation license.

Citrix offers a limited-license evaluation copy of both Citrix XenServer and Citrix AppDNA! If you want to evaluate this technology:

  1. Go to the Citrix website at http://www.citrix.com, and create an account if you don’t have any yet.
  2. Search for and download both AppDNA 6.1 SP1 and XenServer.
The Citrix AppDNA console. Note that the evaluation version offers 5 apps and 30 days.

The evaluation version already gives you the Estate View of the different tests included in AppDNA. The picture below is the Estate View of the Windows 8 tests. From there one would have a high-level idea on the application compatibility testing of the organization.
